Shuffle in, sit down,
stay awhile.
Au Mahj Group brings American Mahjong to life across Thousand Oaks — social events at your favorite local restaurants and cafés, lessons for total beginners and rusty regulars, and the gear to build your own game at home.

Meet Nguyet
Au Mahj Group began with a simple wish — I wanted to find a group of friends to play Mahjong with. What started around one table has grown into a wonderful community built on friendship, connection, and a shared love of the game.
My goal is to create a warm, welcoming place where everyone feels comfortable, whether you've been playing for years or have never picked up a Mahjong tile. I offer beginner-friendly lessons to help you learn the game, build confidence, and get you ready to join the fun.
Each month, Au Mahj Group brings players together at different local establishments, giving us a chance to connect over Mahjong while also discovering and supporting businesses in our community. To me, Mahjong is so much more than a game. It's about the conversations around the table, the friendships that form, and the community we create along the way.
Come learn, play, and find your place at Au table.

Good for the mind.
Better with friends.
American Mahjong rewards the kind of attention that's easy to lose track of during a busy week — reading the discard pile, holding a shifting hand of possibilities, adjusting your strategy on the fly. It's a genuine mental workout, wrapped in two hours of laughing with people you like.
Sharper thinking
Pattern recognition, working memory and planning ahead — the same skills researchers link to healthy cognitive aging, built right into the game.
Real connection
Mahjong gives you a standing reason to see the same faces every week — a rare thing once life gets busy. Regulars become close friends fast.
Low pressure, high fun
No experience needed and no reason to be nervous — every event and lesson is built for people who've never touched a tile.
An old game, having a moment
Mahjong took shape in 19th-century China and crossed to the United States in the 1920s, where it was adapted into today's American Mahjong — built around the National Mah Jongg League's yearly card and its own particular rhythm of joker-swapping and hand-building.
It's having a real cultural resurgence right now: mahjong parlors and tournaments in the film Crazy Rich Asians introduced a new generation to the game's tension and etiquette, and a wave of stylish home sets and social clubs — ours included — has followed.
Every hand is a small puzzle, and every table is a standing invitation to catch up with someone you like.— the whole point of Au Mahj Group
